The Delta Chapter of Tau Epsilon Phi fraternity was installed at Cornell on November 12, 1913. Ben Pologe, second National President, had pledged at the Alpha Chapter at Columbia, and set off for Ithaca. Together with Robert Menaker, Henry Klauber, Charles Roth, Julius Samkoff and Louis Swerdlove, the first TEP chapter outside of New York City was founded, and it became one of the most vocal members on the Executive committee. The clause in the National Constitution ratified in 1916 which stated that "no chapter was to be formed at a strictly professional school" was a victory for Delta over professionalism and for TEP. In 1917, the first crisis struck, and 18 of the 21 brothers expected to return to the house on Buffalo Street entered the military.

This crew flew only two missions before being shot down on what was their third mission. After their second mission to Berlin, Lt. Swerdlove was hospitalized and was replaced by Lt. Krewzinsky so was not with the crew shot down. The photo shows the First Pilot, John Akers, co-pilot, Charles T. Scott, Navigator, Lloyd C. Dell, Bombardier, Murray Swerdlove. All crew members survived with John Akers the only one injured. He fractured both ankles when landing from the parachute jump. They all spent the war in a PW camp and returned. Swerdlove completed all his missions flying with crews piloted by Roger Birkman, Robert Brofft, Bernard Connors and Dave Summerville.
An unusual sidelight: After flying two mission with the Birkman crew Swerdlove was rehospitalized and when the Birkman crew went without him they were shot down. He flew three missions with the Brofft crew as lead bombardier and was transferred to Connor's crew. The Brofft crew was shot down on their next mission! He flew only two missions as a temporary replacement with Connor's crew and they were shot down on their next mission. He completed his missions flying twenty two missions with the Summerville crew. This crew suffered three casualties: two wounded and one killed. Akers now lives in Springfield, Illonois, Scott in Columbus Georgia, Dell in Lake Orion, Michigan, Swerdlove in Framingham, Mass."

Bush needs to fire liars 
Jason Salzman claims in his May 22 commentary, "Media asleep at wheel on Bush misstatements," that the president's supporters say he was misinformed but did not lie. If Bush was misinformed, how does he tolerate the continued employment in his administration of those who lied to him? 
In any other organization, lying to one's superior is cause for immediate dismissal. Why are Dick Cheney, Donald Rumsfeld, Condoleeza Rice, Paul Wolfowitz and George Tenet still on the public payroll?

Research: 
 I am currently working with the chytrid fungus Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis. The fungus is the causative agent of an infectious disease known as amphibian chytridiomycosis. Amphibian chytridiomycosis has been found responsible for the illness and death of amphibians in Australia, New Zealand, Europe, and North, Central, and South America Chytridiomycosis is characterized by hyperkeratosis, sloughing and erosions of the epidermidis, and occasional ulcerations. My goal is to determine whether B. dendrobatidis is affecting amphibian populations in the Plains of Texas. I am using electron and light microscopy as well as certain biochemical approaches to study chytrid infections of amphibians.
