Notes for: Laurie Evelyn SVERDLOVE

For the last decade I have painted the American landscape. Grasslands, wasteland, and land altered by human intervention attract me. While my paintings are representational, they are not strictly so, nor is my concern to make a faithful replica of what my eye and my camera see. Rather, I am interested in the idea of landscape as a human construct - how people mediate the distance between the human and non-human, how the landscape expands our frame of reference and permits contemplation of the human condition.
