BIOGRAPHY: My grandmother Zlate was one of five or six sister's orphaned where the father was killed as a young man by rowdy Cossacks or Polish Russian military men in his bar in Shchedrin. Their mother taught them all to cook and they catered for a living. They took pride in being Denburg's but without a dowry marriage prospects were not easy. These sisters are like Tevy's daughters in Fiddler o the Roof.

Zlate (Zelda) was betrothed to Yechanaia (spelling?) with the help of the match maker. Reizel, who told me, Andrew Sverdlove, these stories, followed her boy friend to New York when he fled the secret police because they knew he threw acid in the face of one of the Tzar's secret police agents.

Baile (Betsy) left on her own and ended up in London where she meet and married her husband, Mr. Jacobs in London, England.

Meitle was matched to a Gorelick. While she stayed in Shedrin at least one daughter was matched to an Okun and got the America while some of the children remained in the USSR.

Hodah (Helen) was matched to a Weiner and they got the New Jersey.

Nashah must have been left behind to care for the mother. Her life is unknown. I heard the mother remarried.

After Zlate and Yechinaya were wed the lived in Parichi aka Partchi (Kozlovka) aka Parycy near his family the Rakhmanov's and Rifkin's. From Shchedrin (aka Shedrin aka Scadryn) to Parichi one goes SW and crosses the Berezina River. I imagine they had to ferry across. When daughter Sara was 5 or 6 and son Aharon younger, Yechinaya moved to Montreal where many of Zlate's Denburg cousins lived. He saved up his money in order to bring the family over. While waiting in Shchedrin, Sara got appendicities. Zlate wrote to say if Sara died she would not come! Bathed in the icey water of the nearby Berezina river Sara eventually healed and lived. Yechinaya never loved this child, Sara, again.

In Montreal my mother Lee (Leah) and aunt Helen (Hodah) were born. The family lived near Sanguinette Street. My Uncles Jack Sverdlove and Harry Rothman played with each other.

They moved to Pittsburgh, PA were Zlate's younger sister, Raezel (now Rose Weiner) lived. Sam Weiner was a tailor. Sara worked in the shop. It may have been 1924.

Yechinaya, now Nathan, drank heavily. He had had a milk route in

Montreal. A horse drawn wagon threw the back alleys delivering milk

from the large dairy cans to small containers. The houses were two

and three family apartments, on on the ground floor and another

with a seperate outside staircase on the second floor.

In Pittsburgh they had a cow. My mother Leah (Lee) remembered

milking her around 1924. They lived across the street from a park

were the cow was grazed.

When Nathan couldn't make a living they moved to 9th Ave., Roselle,

New Jersey Sara met her cousin Dave Rifkin and at age 20 she

married Dave, 1 Oct 1925.

My mother Leah graduated from the Roselle High School 1929 or 1930.

No one remembers why they moved to Brooklyn but they did about

1932-33. In some park, probably near Buffalo Avenue, my two

grandfathers meet each other. They had been friends on Sanguinette

Street in Montreal 20 plus years before. They may not have seen

each other in 17 years! My father Harry, with whom grandpa Louie

Sverdlove was living, was then, perhaps, 27 years old. He was

introduced to "the girl who used to live down the block." My

Uncles, Jack Sverdlove and Harry Rothman, played together as

children! They were born 1907/1908 and would have played together

as 8 to 10 year olds and maybe longer.

Harry fell in love with Lee who was a beautiful yound women of 20

or 21. My mother worked as a buyer for Macy's. But Dad did not want

her to work, an unfortunate ego trip of his generation.

Zlate was diagnosed with acute Leukemia and died May 14, 1934.

Nathan drink himself into a stupor. The family started to fall

apart. My father married my mother and they moved to 167th Street

near Columbia Presbyterian Hospital. Helen moved in with them and

so did Harry Rothman. In 1936 my sister, Zolita was born and named

after Zlate.

In 1939, they bought the home at 566 North Columbus Avenue, Mt.

Vernon, NY I was raised there. I was born March 29, 1940 and named

for Anna Sverdlove Ginsburg who had just died during an operation.
